Introduction

This guide is designed for the five remaining study days before the DTZ exam: 20–24 September 2026.

The objective is not to learn all B1 grammar in four days. The objective is to maximise exam performance by concentrating on a small number of reliable structures, repeated speaking patterns, writing templates, listening strategies and reading strategies.

Your priority based on current strengths and weaknesses:
  1. Speaking — highest priority.
  2. Writing — second priority, because templates can improve quickly.
  3. Listening — focus on key information, numbers, changes and distractors.
  4. Reading — already your strongest area; improve speed and accuracy rather than studying large amounts of grammar.

Main exam rule

Use simple German that you can control.
A short correct sentence is better than a complicated sentence that breaks down.
Examples Ich reise gern.
Ich kann nicht kommen, weil ich krank bin.
Ich denke, dass das eine gute Idee ist.
Können Sie die Frage bitte wiederholen?
Do not stop speaking because of one mistake. Continue.

How to Use the Tracking Codes

Every important section has a tracking code.

CodeChapter
L1.xListening
R2.xReading
W3.xWriting
S4.xSpeaking
Examples L1.3.2 = Listening → Numbers/Times/Dates → Times
R2.2.1 = Reading → Scanning → Keywords
W3.4.2 = Writing → Formal email → Requests
S4.3.1 = Speaking → Teil 2 → Photo structure

When the study plan says “Study S4.2 + S4.2.1”, go directly to those headings.

Intensive Study Plan — 20 to 24 September 2026

You have five study days including today before the exam on Friday, 25 September.

DayDatePlanned studyMain purpose
Day 1Sun 20 Sep6 hoursBuild speaking + writing foundations
Day 2Mon 21 Sep4 hoursTeil 2 + first complete model test
Day 3Tue 22 Sep6 hoursTeil 3 + second complete model test + repair
Day 4Wed 23 Sepabout 4 hours (recommended)Third model test + targeted correction
Day 5Thu 24 Sepabout 6 hours (recommended)Model-test day: tests 4 and 5 + final review

Model-Test Strategy

The target is five complete exam simulations. Do not simply complete five tests and count scores. Every test must produce an error list that determines what you practise next.

TestWhenTypePurpose
MT1Day 2Complete model testEstablish realistic baseline
MT2Day 3Complete model testMeasure improvement
MT3Day 4Complete model testFind remaining repeated errors
MT4Day 5 morningComplete model testFinal timed rehearsal
MT5Day 5 afternoonComplete model testFinal confidence / strategy check

Use official DTZ model sets for the first two when available. The remaining tests can be DTZ-format simulations completed with me.

Important: Two complete tests are enough on the final day. Three or more full tests on the final day would leave too little time to analyse mistakes and would create unnecessary fatigue.

For every model test, record:

AreaScore / resultMain mistakeSection to review
ListeningL1.x
ReadingR2.x
WritingW3.x
SpeakingS4.x
Day 16 hoursBuild the Core
Main objective: Move from knowing isolated German to having reliable exam patterns.
Block 1
75 min — Introduction + Follow-Up Questions

Study: S4.2 (final introduction) · S4.2.1 (examiner follow-up questions) · S4.2.2 (emergency speaking sentences)

Practice:

  1. Read the introduction aloud twice.
  2. Say it once without reading.
  3. Answer every follow-up question aloud.
  4. Repeat weak answers until they come naturally.

Target: 60–90 seconds without English.

Block 2
45 min — Core Grammar for Speaking

Study: S4.5.1 (verb in position 2) · S4.5.2 (weil) · S4.5.3 (dass) · S4.5.4 (modal verbs). Produce at least ten sentences yourself.

Seit 2020 lebe ich in Deutschland.
Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich hier arbeiten möchte.
Ich denke, dass Deutsch für meine Zukunft wichtig ist.

Target: use weil correctly without stopping to think about the rule.

Block 3
75 min — Speaking Teil 2 Foundation

Study: S4.3.1 (universal photo structure) · S4.3.2 (photo vocabulary) · S4.3.3 (first 3 photo topics)

Practise: supermarket · doctor · family in park.

For every picture use: 1. what you see; 2. where; 3. what people are doing; 4. one guess; 5. topic; 6. your experience; 7. your opinion.

Target: at least 45–60 seconds per picture.

Block 4
60 min — Writing Foundation

Study: W3.2 (universal structure) · W3.3 (formal/informal) · W3.4 (reusable sentences) · W3.5.1 (appointment email). Then write the appointment email once without copying.

Target: address every task point and finish the email correctly.

Block 5
45 min — Listening Foundation

Study: L1.2 (four-step method) · L1.3.1 (confusing numbers) · L1.3.2 (times) · L1.3.3 (dates) · L1.5 (short drills). Say all numbers and times aloud.

Target: distinguish old/new appointments and common time expressions.

Block 6
30 min — Reading Speed

Study: R2.2 (question → keyword → scan) · R2.3 (high-value vocabulary) · R2.6.1 (short reading task).

Target: stop translating whole texts.

Block 7
30 min — Active Recall

Close the document. From memory: say your introduction; say five weil sentences; write the formal email opening and closing; describe one imaginary picture; say five planning phrases.

Day 1 End Target
Day 24 hoursTeil 2 + MT1
Main objective: First realistic measurement.
Block 1
60 min — Photo + Experience

Study/practise S4.3.1–S4.3.4. Do five topics: 1. supermarket, 2. doctor, 3. family, 4. train station, 5. workplace. Do not read the model answer while speaking.

Block 2
110 min — MT1 Complete Model Test

Complete: listening under time pressure · reading under time pressure · writing in 30 minutes · speaking simulation. Do not pause the clock to look up vocabulary.

Block 3
50 min — MT1 Error Review

For every mistake classify it: vocabulary · misunderstood task · grammar · time pressure · distractor · missing task point · stopped speaking. Then go directly to the relevant tracking section.

Day 2 End Target: MT1 gives your first realistic exam baseline.
Day 36 hoursTeil 3 + MT2 + Repair
Main objective: Build interaction skills and correct repeated problems from MT1.
Block 1
75 min — Planning Together

Study: S4.4.1 (five-step structure) · S4.4.2 (phrase bank) · S4.4.3 (model dialogue). Practise: birthday · excursion · moving house.

Block 2
45 min — Writing Repair

Block 3
110 min — MT2 Complete Model Test

Run a complete test under exam conditions. No dictionary. No translator. No pauses.

Block 4
60 min — MT2 Error Review

Compare MT1 and MT2. Ask: which mistakes disappeared? which mistakes repeated? which section still prevents B1? Repeated mistakes receive priority.

Block 5
60 min — Listening + Reading Repair

Depending on MT2: listening weakness → L1.2–L1.4; reading weakness → R2.2–R2.5.

Block 6
30 min — Oral Recall

Without notes: introduction; one photo; one planning conversation; five emergency phrases.

Day 3 End Target: You should now know your actual highest-risk exam section.
Day 4about 4 hoursMT3 + Targeted Correction
Main objective: Do not broaden the syllabus. Repair only what continues to fail.
Block 1
110 min — MT3 Complete Model Test

Treat it like the real exam.

Block 2
60 min — Error Analysis

Create a Top 10 Mistakes list. Example:

  1. Miss nicht in listening.
  2. Confuse 13 and 30.
  3. Forget writing point 4.
  4. Verb position after weil.
  5. Stop too early in picture description.
Block 3
60 min — Repair Top 5 Mistakes

Use only the relevant tracking sections. Do not open unrelated grammar material.

Block 4
30 min — Speaking Fast Drill

One minute each: 1. introduction, 2. supermarket, 3. doctor, 4. train, 5. birthday planning.

Day 4 End Target: The next day should be rehearsal, not learning.
Day 5about 6 hoursFinal Model-Test Day
Main objective: Rehearse the complete process twice and finish fresh enough for the real exam.
Block 1
110 min — MT4 Complete Model Test

Exact exam timing. Do not interrupt the test to correct yourself.

Break
30 to 45 min

Walk, eat and stop looking at German.

Block 3

  • Listen to the end before choosing.
  • Check nicht / kein / nur.

Progress Rule

Do not judge improvement from one test alone. Look for:

Chapter 1 — Listening L1.x

L1.1 Listening Objective

You do not need to understand every German word. Your job is to identify:

L1.1.1 The Listening Mindset

  • Do not translate the whole recording into English.
  • Listen for information, not perfect understanding.
  • If you miss one sentence, continue listening.

L1.2 The Four-Step Listening Method

L1.2.1 Step 1 — Read the Question First

Before the recording begins, identify what the question wants.

Wann? → listen for time/date
Wo? → listen for place
Warum? → listen for reason
Was soll die Person tun? → listen for action
Wie viel? → listen for price/number

L1.2.2 Step 2 — Listen for Keywords

Example — Question: Wann ist der neue Termin? Important words: neuer Termin. You do not need every word in the message.

L1.2.3 Step 3 — Watch for Changes

A common pattern is:

Der Termin war am Dienstag um 9 Uhr.
Leider müssen wir ihn verschieben.
Bitte kommen Sie am Mittwoch um 14:30 Uhr.

Possible distractors: Dienstag · 09:00

Correct information: Mittwoch · 14:30

L1.2.4 Step 4 — Choose and Move On

If you are unsure, choose the best answer and continue. Do not lose the next question because you are still thinking about the previous one.

L1.3 Numbers, Times and Dates

L1.3.1 Numbers That Are Easy to Confuse

Practise aloud:

NumberGermanNumberGerman
13dreizehn30dreißig
14vierzehn40vierzig
15fünfzehn50fünfzig
16sechzehn60sechzig
17siebzehn70siebzig

Also practise:

Drill — say these aloud without looking

Say these aloud without looking at the answers:

  1. 13
  2. 30
  3. 17
  4. 70
  5. 45
  6. 54
  7. 26
  8. 62

L1.3.2 Times

TimeGerman
08:00acht Uhr
08:15acht Uhr fünfzehn / Viertel nach acht
08:30acht Uhr dreißig / halb neun
08:45acht Uhr fünfundvierzig / Viertel vor neun
09:10neun Uhr zehn
14:30vierzehn Uhr dreißig / halb drei
18:45achtzehn Uhr fünfundvierzig
Important: halb neun = 08:30, not 09:30.

L1.3.3 Dates

Useful patterns:

Pay attention to:

L1.4 Common Listening Situations

L1.4.1 Appointment

Listen for: old appointment · new appointment · reason for change · what to bring · whether to call.

Useful words: der Termin, verschieben, absagen, vereinbaren, krank, mitbringen, anrufen, Versicherungskarte

L1.4.2 Transport

Listen for: platform · delay · cancellation · destination · replacement transport.

Useful words: der Zug, der Bus, der Bahnhof, das Gleis, die Verspätung, ausfallen, umsteigen, abfahren, ankommen

Example: Der Zug nach Bonn fährt heute nicht von Gleis 4, sondern von Gleis 7.

Question: Von welchem Gleis fährt der Zug?

Answer: Gleis 7.

L1.4.3 Shopping / Prices

Listen for: old price versus new price · discount · quantity · opening hours.

Useful words: kosten, Euro, Angebot, Rabatt, reduziert, geöffnet, geschlossen, nur heute

L1.4.4 Voicemail / Workplace

Listen for: caller · problem · requested action · deadline · phone number.

Useful phrases:

L1.5 Short Listening-Style Drills

Read each text once only if possible.

L1.5.1 Drill A

Guten Tag, hier ist die Praxis Dr. Weber. Ihr Termin am Montag um zehn Uhr muss leider verschoben werden. Bitte kommen Sie am Dienstag um 15 Uhr. Bringen Sie bitte Ihre Versicherungskarte mit.
  1. When was the old appointment?
  2. When is the new appointment?
  3. What must the person bring?

L1.5.2 Drill B

Achtung am Gleis 6. Der Regionalzug nach Bonn hat heute etwa zwanzig Minuten Verspätung.
  1. Which platform?
  2. Destination?
  3. What is the problem?

L1.5.3 Drill C

Hallo Frau Müller. Hier ist Herr Schneider. Die Besprechung morgen beginnt nicht um neun Uhr, sondern erst um halb elf. Bitte informieren Sie auch Frau Koch.
  1. What changed?
  2. What should Frau Müller do?
  3. What does halb elf mean?
L1.5.4 Answers

A: Monday 10:00; Tuesday 15:00; insurance card.

B: Platform 6; Bonn; about 20 minutes delay.

C: Meeting is now at 10:30; inform Frau Koch; 10:30.

L1.6 Day-4 Listening Mini-Mock

Before the exam, do at least one official DTZ listening practice with audio. During the practice, make a small table:

QuestionMy answerCorrect?Why was I wrong?
1
2
3

Classify errors:

Your goal is to identify the type of error, not just count wrong answers.

Chapter 2 — Reading R2.x

R2.1 Reading Objective

Your current reading performance is stronger than your other skills. Do not spend four days trying to learn every word. Improve:

R2.2 The Reading Method

R2.2.1 Question → Keyword → Scan → Answer

Example question: Wann ist die Kita geschlossen? Keyword: geschlossen. Search for this word or related information in the text. Do not translate every sentence.

R2.2.2 Look for Names, Dates and Conditions

Important information is often: days, dates, times, prices, locations, names, telephone numbers, requirements.

R2.2.3 Negative Words

These can completely change the answer: nicht, kein, keine, nie, nur, erst, leider, geschlossen, verboten

Example: Der Kurs ist nicht für Anfänger.

If the question asks: Ist der Kurs für Anfänger?

Answer: Nein.

R2.3 High-Value Reading Vocabulary

R2.4 Common Text Types

R2.4.1 Notices

Typical questions: what is closed? from when? until when? what should people do?

R2.4.2 Advertisements

Look for: product/service · price · location · opening hours · conditions · contact information.

R2.4.3 Emails and Letters

First identify the purpose: invitation · complaint · cancellation · request · information · appointment · problem.

R2.4.4 Course Information

Look for: course level · start date · time · cost · registration deadline · location.

R2.4.5 Housing

Look for: rent · rooms · location · size · deposit · availability · contact.

R2.5 Reading Elimination Strategy

When three answers are possible:

  1. Remove answers contradicted by the text.
  2. Remove answers that contain information not mentioned.
  3. Choose the answer supported by the text.
Do not choose an answer because it “sounds logical”. Choose the answer because the text supports it.

R2.6 Reading Mini-Test

R2.6.1 Text A

Liebe Eltern, am Freitag bleibt die Kita wegen einer Fortbildung geschlossen. Am Montag öffnen wir wieder wie gewohnt um 7:30 Uhr. Bitte holen Sie die Sachen Ihrer Kinder spätestens am Donnerstag ab.
  1. Why is the Kita closed?
  2. When does it open again?
  3. What should parents do?
Answers
  1. Because of staff training.
  2. Monday at 07:30.
  3. Pick up the children's things by Thursday.

R2.6.2 Text B

Deutschkurs B1 am Abend. Montag und Mittwoch, 18:00–20:15 Uhr. Kursbeginn: 5. Oktober. Anmeldung bis 25. September. Gebühr: 120 Euro.
  1. Is the course in the morning?
  2. When does it start?
  3. What is the registration deadline?
  4. How much does it cost?
Answers
  1. No.
  2. 5 October.

R2.6.3 Timed Practice Rule

For a 45-minute reading section:
